PivtBuild
Pivot Build · Brand Kit · v1

The Pivot system, on the Build desk.

Pivot Build is a sub-brand, not a new brand. It inherits the whole Pivot identity — the eight-dot mark, the three grounds, the three type voices, the crisp 4px frame — including Pivot orange — the same accent Pivot News and Pivot Invest use. Only the second word of the wordmark changes. Everything on this page is already locked by the parent system.

02 /

Where Build sits.

Three sibling products, one wordmark, one orange. The second word is the only variable — always set in Pivot orange, never in a per-vertical hue. Read side by side they are one masthead family, not three companies that happen to share a font.

Rule: verticals do not get separate logo colors, logo systems, fonts, or grounds. If a surface needs to feel like Build, it does so through the desk field behind story art, the section metadata, and the copy — never through a new identity.

03 /

Three grounds, layered.

Unchanged from the parent system. Paper is the page, white cards hold content, cream is a warm accent for hero bands, email canvas and pull quotes — never the whole page.

Build-specific note: none — grounds are inherited verbatim. Pivot orange is an accent, never a ground: it appears as the wordmark, links, kickers and button fills, and never as a page background or a large wash.

One accent, eight desks.

Pivot orange is the accent for every product in the family — the wordmark’s second word, links, kickers, buttons, active states. The eight desk colors are editorial metadata, not competing identities: they field story art, dot section tags and mark cross-desk links. Build adds no new tokens.

Vermilion doubles as Pivot orange, the accent every product shares. Marigold stays Build’s editorial color — it fields story art and marks Build content inside Pivot News — but it is never promoted to a logo or UI color. Supporting text stays ink / ink-soft / muted exactly as in Pivot 5.

Three voices, three jobs.

Identical to the parent system, and deliberately so. Newsreader for emotion, Space Grotesk for reading and UI, IBM Plex Mono for data only — which, on a builders’ product, also means versions, latencies, token counts and model names.

Imagery: one idea, drawn.

Same pipeline, same hand. A single conceptual metaphor per story in flat shapes, drawn in the locked ink set — cream, ink-navy, vermilion — on a saturated desk field. On Build, marigold leads the rotation; the other desk colors still appear so a run of stories has rhythm. Vermilion is reserved for the ink set, so it is never used as a field.

One metaphor

A single idea per image — the headline made visual. Never two.

Flat shapes

Bold, hard-edged. No gradients, shadows or photographic gloss.

One ink set

Drawn in cream, ink-navy & vermilion — the same hand every day.

Rotating field

Marigold anchors Build stories; other desk colors break up a long run.

No screenshots as hero art. Product screenshots, terminal captures and IDE windows are supporting figures inside an article — cropped, on a card, with a mono caption. The hero is always the drawn metaphor.

Core components.

Crisp 4px corners, Space Grotesk labels, Pivot orange for links and anything small and colored. Two additions Build needs that the newsroom doesn’t: a code block and a spec strip.

Do
  • Set “Build” in Pivot orange #E5431B, “Pivot” in ink, on paper, card and cream.
  • Use Pivot orange for links, kickers, buttons and active states — same as News and Invest.
  • Keep marigold as Build’s editorial color for story fields and section dots only.
  • Ship the supplied logo files — don’t redraw the wordmark in live text in production.
Open the download pack →
Don’t
  • Don’t recolor the eight dots, or make a Build-only mark.
  • Don’t give Build its own hue — verticals share one logo color.
  • Don’t use orange as a page ground or a large wash.
  • Don’t introduce a new typeface to make Build feel more technical — mono already does that job.
